eBook Reader - Review and Compare

A whole new reading experience is unfolding before our very eyes with new technology that allows us to carry vast amounts of reading material around and have it ready to view on a portable screen or ebook reader.
Here at www.compareebookreader.co.uk we shall deliver comprehensive reviews, upcoming news and price information on the best eBook Readers that are available to the UK consumer.

The UK market is dominated at the moment by the range of Sony Readers but other independent electronic manufacturers are starting to emerge in what is set to become a highly competitive area of portable electronic media devices.

What is an eBook Reader

An ebook reader is the ideal device for anybody who likes to read books on the move. In truth, if you are making one train journey and want to take a single book to read, then you are better off simply taking a paperback (because it is considerably cheaper). However, if you have to carry several books, because you may need to refer to all of them, or you simply want a selection to read, then an ebook reader becomes more useful. In fact, as most ebooks readers can store hundreds of books at once (with the exact number dependent on the specific model), you can actually carry around a large collection of books on a small, lightweight device.
For the novice buyer we recommend that you read our Guide to Buying Ebook Readers.

E-Ink Technology

Most peoples’ initial reaction to the prospect of reading an entire book from an electronic screen is that they would find it most uncomfortable. This is indeed true of most displays (e.g. LCDs), but it is not the case with ebook readers as they use E Ink Vizplex® electronic paper.
This has very different qualities from all other types of electronic display, not least because it doesn’t use a backlit screen (the main aspect of an electronic display that fatigues your eyes). It is also viewable from almost any angle and in direct sunlight.
In fact, the experience of reading an E Ink image is much closer to that of reading from paper than an electronic screen, which is obviously why it makes such a great material for ebook reader screens.
A further advantage of the E Ink Vizplex® display is that it uses very little power, as such the battery life on all ebook readers is very impressive, especially when compared to other portable electronic devices such as mp3 players, mobile phones and digital cameras.
The exact battery life varies between models, but you should expect to achieve something in the region of two weeks of heavy use between charges.

File Format Compatibility

Ebooks themselves have to be purchased separately as computer files that can be stored on your computer and then transferred to the ebook reader. Just as with audio files, there are several different file formats used for ebooks. Fortunately, most ebook readers have excellent compatibility with all file types.

Not all ereaders are the same. The Amazon Kindle 2 allows the owner instant access eBooks to thousand of titles over the Amazon Wireless Network. Unfortunately there has been a delay in the release date for the Kindle 2 in the UK due to compatibility issues, but it is expected here in the very near future.

Overall, ebook readers are ideal if you want to access a number of books at once and you don’t want to be burdened with the paper copies.
